A reputable company is recruiting highly experienced candidates to fill the position below:

Job Title: Project Accountant (Chartered)
Location: Abuja (FCT)
Employment Type: Contract
Contract Duration: Two years (renewable)
Department: Accounts & Finance
Reports To: Senior Manager, Finance & Chief Financial Officer


Key Responsibilities

Financial Oversight & Compliance:
* Review and validate all vouchers, invoices, and journal entries for correct coding, allocation, and authorization before submission to the CFO.
* Ensure every transaction is fully documented, accurately recorded in the ERP, properly filed, and readily retrievable for audits and statutory reporting.
* Maintain full compliance with IFRS/GAAP, Nigerian tax legislation, donor rules, and any other applicable regulations.

Budgeting, Forecasting & Funding Utilization:
* Lead the annual budget cycle, multi-year forecasts, and funding-utilization plans for all projects.
* Advise project teams on technical programme budgeting to align resources with implementation timelines.
* Defend budgets and provide supporting schedules during presentations to the National Assembly, donors, and other stakeholders.
* Track actuals vs. budget, perform variance analysis, and recommend corrective actions.

Cash‑Flow & Treasury Management:
* Manage daily cash balances, bank reconciliations, and payment runs (ACH, cheques, online portals).
* Prepare rolling cash-flow forecasts, highlighting liquidity gaps or surplus positions.
* Proactively flag funding shortfalls and propose mitigation strategies (e.g., draw-downs, investment sweeps).

Financial Reporting & General Ledger Control:
* Oversee month-end and year-end close, ensuring all sub-ledgers reconcile to the general ledger.
* Produce accurate, timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management dashboards.
* Support the CFO with ad-hoc donor, regulatory, and board reports; ensure data integrity in the accounting software.

Audit, Internal Control & Policy Development:
* Coordinate external audits and internal review missions, ensuring prompt resolution of findings.
* Design, implement, and update finance policies, SOPs, and internal controls to strengthen accountability.
* Continually monitor compliance and initiate process improvements that enhance efficiency and reduce risk.

Payroll, Tax & Statutory Obligations:
* Supervise payroll processing, PAYE, pension, and other statutory deductions; confirm timely remittance.
* Oversee preparation and filing of company and project tax returns (VAT, WHT, CIT, etc.).
* Ensure prompt payment of salaries, vendor invoices, and statutory levies.

Cost, Inventory & Project Accounting:
* Analyse project costs, track commitments, and ensure correct allocation to work breakdown structures.
* Oversee inventory valuation and usage reporting to support procurement and production planning.
* Provide cost insights to guide pricing, contract negotiations, and resource-use optimisation.

Stakeholder Engagement & Team Leadership:
* Liaise with the Project Accountant and functional leads to ensure consistent, accurate financial data across all records.
* Collaborate with executives and department heads to monitor financial performance and advise on cost-effective strategies.
* Present clear financial insights to decision-makers and mentor junior accountants, fostering a high-performing finance team.

Systems & Process Optimisation:
* Maintain data accuracy within the ERP; lead finance modules during system upgrades or new implementations.
* Champion automation, paperless workflows, and best-practice reporting tools to drive continuous improvement.


Qualifications and Experience

* Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or related fields
* A Master’s degree is an added advantage.
* Professional certification (ACA, ACCA, CPA, or equivalent) is required.
* Minimum of 9 years of progressive experience in financial management, preferably within donor-funded or government-linked projects in the power sector.
* Demonstrated experience in project finance, donor compliance, and budgeting in a development or public sector context.
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
* Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., Microsoft Dynamics, QuickBooks, Tally etc) Microsoft Excel.
* Experience with the Remita platform is an added advantage.
* Experience in audit coordination and familiarity with national and international financial reporting regulations is also an advantage.
