A non-governmental organisation, Search for Common Ground Nigeria has organised a four-day capacity-building programme to sensitise private security operatives on issues surrounding human rights violations.

The programme, which began on Tuesday in Yenagoa is tagged: ‘Capacity Building To Private Security Actors On Voluntary Principles,’ and is aimed at fostering inclusive community security approaches to addressing the systemic drivers of violence and criminality in communities in the Niger Delta region.

The participants were drawn from various groups including private security organisations in select communities across all the eight local government areas of Bayelsa State.

At the end of the programme, the participants are expected to come up with an action plan on how to address human rights violations in their communities.

The focal states of the project are Bayelsa, Delta and Rivers, and the programme is expected to be carried out in the other focal states to equally tackle human rights violations in oil com

The training would also centre on how NGOs can employ enhanced advocacy, reciprocal training and access to new tools to ensure the protection of the rights of the residents of oil-producing communities.

One of the modules reads, “NGOs have played an important role in leading the development of tools and guidance notes to help improve and deepen implementation.

“They often bring to the table significant expertise and deep knowledge which allows them outsized influence and a lasting positive impact.”
