The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Hon. Benjamin Kalu, has reiterated his dedication to ensuring that traditional rulers are granted constitutional roles in the country.

Kalu made this statement during a courtesy visit by the Royal Fathers of the Ila/Boluwaduro/Ifedayo Federal constituency and Southwest lawmakers, led by His Royal Majesty Oba (Barr) Adedokun Omoniyi Abolarin, the Orangun of Okeila. The delegation presented a proposal advocating for the creation of Igbomina State in the Southwest.

In his address to the delegation, Kalu, who also serves as the Chairman of the House Committee on Constitution Review, praised traditional institutions for their vital contributions to national unity. He emphasized that traditional rulers should play a recognized role in the ongoing constitutional amendment process.

On the subject of the Igbomina state proposal, Kalu expressed his support for the delegation’s belief that the establishment of a new state would better serve the people at the grassroots level. He, however, urged the delegation to ensure that all necessary constitutional procedures for state creation were followed. Kalu assured them that if these requirements were met, their proposal would move to the next stage.

Kalu also expressed his appreciation for the traditional rulers, noting their critical role in fostering unity and peace in the country. He further added, “I commend the traditional rulers for the significant work they’re doing in promoting national unity, peace, and preventing community crises. That’s why we are working toward finding a way to formally recognize the traditional institutions in our Constitution at all levels, local government, state, and national.”

He continued, “Your leadership is crucial in maintaining the safety of our communities, preserving our culture, and ensuring the values that define us as a people. In the Southwest and Nigeria, your role is invaluable in preventing cultural erosion due to deviant behaviors. As custodians of culture, you are ensuring that our identity remains intact.”

While addressing the proposed creation of Igbomina State, Kalu acknowledged the delegates’ hopes that the establishment of the state would allow for better democratic dividends at the grassroots level. He emphasized the importance of fulfilling all constitutional requirements for state creation, including the necessary documentation and support from local governments and legislators. Kalu reassured the delegation that their proposal would receive due attention if all provisions of the constitution were met.
