The Ogun State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Sina Ogungbade (SAN), has accused the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 2, Lagos, Adegoke Fayoade, of engaging in cheap blackmail and collaborating with land grabbers to perpetuate injustice in the state.

Ogungbade made the accusation in a statement on Monday, responding to a media report in which Fayoade accused him of attempting to secure the release of a murder suspect.

According to the Ogun State government, the report was entirely false and seemed aimed at preemptively undermining the Attorney General’s ongoing review of “misconduct and complicity in an ongoing criminal enterprise involving officers of the Nigerian Police Force, Zone 2, Lagos State.”

Ogungbade further explained that the dispute with Fayoade stemmed from a conflict between two local land agents in the state.

He revealed that one faction had been exploiting the police and law enforcement to persecute the other, lodging false reports and presenting coached witnesses whose testimonies fell apart under scrutiny.

He added that some of the witnesses who testified could not identify the alleged perpetrator, despite claiming to have seen the crime take place.

“Given these inconsistencies, it became clear that the Ministry of Justice was being unwittingly used to perpetuate injustice and target a citizen. As a result, the Office of the Attorney-General discontinued the false charges in court,” Ogungbade stated.

However, despite the dismissal of the charges, Ogungbade claimed that those involved in the case fabricated a new allegation of murder against the same individual.

This new claim was also undermined by a thorough investigation conducted by the Ogun State Police Command, which relied on credible and unimpeachable witnesses.

“When the investigation didn’t go in their favour, these same complainants sought to have the case hijacked by AIG Fayoade.

There was no justification for transferring the case to Lagos, and contrary to the false media report, the suspect was not transferred to Abuja,” he said.
