The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), has reiterated its core mandate as a regulatory agency focused on consumer rights and market competition, emphasising that it is not responsible for price control.

The commission’s Executive Vice Chairman, Tunji Bello, made this clarification during the 2025 World Consumer Rights Day celebration held on Wednesday in Abuja.

He stated that the FCCPC’s primary role is to protect consumers of goods and services in Nigeria, not to function as a Price Control Board. Bello’s statement comes in the wake of a recent ruling by a federal high court in Abuja, which barred the FCCPC from participating in a lawsuit filed by Dangote Petroleum Refinery against the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited and oil marketers over the importation of refined petroleum products.

Delivering his judgment, Justice Inyang Ekwo ruled that the case could be decided without the FCCPC’s involvement. Addressing attendees at the event, Bello highlighted misconceptions among some members of the public regarding the commission’s responsibilities.

He pointed out that some commentators misinterpret the law and erroneously expect the FCCPC to regulate prices. “Permit me to briefly address a concerning trend, the misinterpretation of the FCCPC’s role by certain individuals, including some in the media, who inadvertently mislead the public due to a lack of understanding of the law,” Bello said. He emphasised that Sections 17 and 18 of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act 2018 clearly define the commission’s authority to regulate competition and consumer protection across all sectors in line with global best practices.
