The French embassy in Nigeria has expressed its readiness to partner with tertiary institutions in the country to advance the opportunities associated with studying French.

The Consul General of France in Nigeria, Laurent Favier, stated this while speaking at a seminar titled, ‘French Up Your Career,’ at the Alliance Française in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The seminar is part of the ongoing French Language Week celebrations.

Favier explained that, as one of the official languages of the United Nations, the European Union, and the African Union, French, when properly utilised, can serve as a window to various careers both within and outside Nigeria.

He said, “You will discover how being fluent in French can provide a significant edge on the job market and lead to professional careers that you may not have even considered before.

“So what does this mean for you as students here in Nigeria? Learning French doesn’t mean adding a language to your resume. It provides you with new opportunities, whether or not you are interested in diplomatic and International relations, international development, translation and Interpretation or journalism.

“Companies in Tech are looking for bilingual professionals to assist with software localization, customer support, and managing projects in French-speaking regions.”

The envoy continued, “The French embassy is not only mobilized to help learners discover promising sectors. We are also providing our support and expertise in training teachers and optimizing university programs.

“The ultimate goal is to help create jobs and empower the youths by making university training more practical and effective.”

Speaking to newsmen on the sidelines of the event, the Director of Alliance Française Port Harcourt, Mrs Marina Lacal, reiterated that the conference aimed at informing French learners of the opportunities associated with having a grasp of the language.

Lacal stated, “This year, we decided to organise this conference to understand how French can help all Nigerians in their career. We have human resources who will tell us how they are implementing French in their companies and how French is useful.

“It is also to encourage the students and the learners of the French language that the language can open them some doors.
