Award-winning poet and literary advocate Godson Osarenren marked World Poetry Day with Naija Poetry Fest 2.0, a festival dedicated to expanding Nigeria’s literary space and positioning Nigerian poetry on the global stage.

Held in collaboration with Alliance Française, the event took place at the Mike Adenuga Centre in Ikoyi, Lagos, under the theme “Poetry in Motion: Wheeling Around the World.”

Speaking on the festival’s vision, Osarenren, author of Broken Cross and The Bush Radio, emphasised poetry’s power to critique society, celebrate excellence, and foster global connections.

“We have satirical poems that address societal ills and eulogies that praise those making a difference. This festival celebrates the power of words to transcend borders and unite hearts. It is about peace and inclusion,” he said.

Osarenren also highlighted the Naija Poetry Fest Community, an online forum that engages upcoming poets with weekly writing exercises, mentorship sessions, and training from renowned poets.

Renowned poet and keynote speaker Dr Obari Gomba, recipient of the 2023 Chinua Achebe Literature Prize, reinforced poetry’s enduring role in shaping society.

“Poetry has always served aesthetic, didactic, and social functions. It would be a shame for any generation not to create and celebrate poetry,” he noted.

The festival featured a panel discussion with literary heavyweights, poetry performances, and a high-stakes competition.

In the poetry contest, Adeṣewa Alagbala emerged as the winner, with Ojo Anuoluwapo Favour and Onyegbuna Priceless securing second and third places, respectively. The top contestants shared a cash prize of one million naira, alongside other consolation rewards.

Distinguished guests at the event included Sylva Nze Ifedigbo (2022 Chinua Achebe Prize winner), Amarachukwu Chimeka (CEO, Purple Shelves Books), and Achalugo Chioma Ilozumba.
