The Arewa Youth Assembly has raised concerns about Dangote Petroleum Refinery’s decision to suspend the sale of petroleum products in Naira, warning that this move threatens Nigeria’s economic stability.

The group accused the refinery of misleading the public by initially claiming to operate in Naira, only to shift to dollar-based transactions, which they believe undermines public trust and worsens economic challenges.

In a statement signed by Mohammed Salihu Danlami, Speaker of the Arewa Youth Assembly, the group challenged Dangote Refinery to disclose the actual cost of producing a litre of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS). They noted that the refinery’s recent actions resemble those of other marketers it previously criticised, raising further concerns about transparency in the sector.

The Assembly also expressed worry that the refinery might be influencing government policies in ways that could hinder economic progress. They highlighted that the potential for artificial scarcity was averted by the government’s decision to allow other marketers to import petroleum products, which prevented a possible fuel crisis similar to that in the Niger Republic.

The Arewa Youth Assembly urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and to critically evaluate claims of cheaper products from the refinery. They called on regulatory bodies to ensure that Dangote Refinery prioritises national interests over private profits.

The statement reads in part: “Now that Dangote Refinery has suspended sales in Naira, we challenge the company to be transparent and disclose the actual cost of producing a litre of PMS. The real competition begins now, as Dangote—just like the marketers it once criticised—is now operating with dollar-based transactions. Nigerians deserve accountability and clarity.

“Furthermore, we express our concern that the refinery may be influencing government decisions that could hinder economic progress. The recent decision to allow marketers to import products was crucial in preventing artificial scarcity. Without this intervention, Nigeria could have faced a fuel crisis similar to that in the Niger Republic.

“The nation deserves clarity regarding the pricing and availability of petroleum products. We urge Nigerians to stay informed and vigilant. Additionally, we call on the country’s petroleum regulatory bodies to ensure that Dangote Refinery operates transparently and prioritises the interests of Nigerians.”
