The Federal Government has defended President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, stating that the decision was necessary to prevent the total collapse of governance in the oil-rich state.

Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, made this assertion on Wednesday while addressing State House correspondents in Abuja. He also clarified that the former governor of Rivers State and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, played no role in the political crisis that led to the emergency declaration.

Fagbemi assured that Rivers State’s allocation from the Federation Account would be made available to Vice Admiral Ibok-Étè Ibas (retd.), who was appointed as the state’s sole administrator by President Tinubu.

“If the administrator requests it, the allocation will be released to him,” Fagbemi stated. “To me, it is in order for the release of that fund because the extraordinary situation has taken the state out of the normal governance process.”

Tinubu’s Decision Was Timely

Defending Tinubu’s action, the AGF stressed that the President acted at the right time to prevent further deterioration of governance in Rivers State.

“We have about two years into this administration. Now, when do you think the President should have intervened? Should he have waited until everything was destroyed? I don’t think so,” he said.

Fagbemi added that Tinubu had previously attempted to mediate the crisis, giving all parties involved ample time to reconcile their differences before deciding to impose emergency rule.

On Tuesday, Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, suspending Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the state House of Assembly for an initial period of six months.

The declaration followed prolonged political instability in the state, largely attributed to a power struggle between Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike. The crisis had disrupted governance and raised concerns about security and economic stability in the state.
