Nigeria and Brazil have taken a major step toward deepening their bilateral relations as a high-level Brazilian delegation, led by Minister of Foreign Affairs Mauro Vieira, arrived in Abuja on Wednesday for talks aimed at enhancing cooperation between the two nations.

The visit marks a significant milestone in diplomatic relations that date back to Nigeria’s independence in 1960 and focuses on strengthening partnerships in agriculture, energy, and infrastructure development.

During discussions, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, reaffirmed the country’s ambition to join both BRICS and the G20, citing the benefits of membership in global economic and governance reforms.

He emphasized Nigeria’s shared vision with Brazil in advocating for a restructured global financial system and the reform of the United Nations Security Council to allow countries like Nigeria and Brazil to become permanent members.

A key highlight of the talks was the strategic dialogue mechanism between Nigeria and Brazil, which has existed since 2013.

According to him, Brazil maintains this unique engagement with only three countries, with Nigeria being one of them. The mechanism, chaired by the vice presidents of both nations, serves as a framework for discussions on economic and diplomatic cooperation.

The Brazilian delegation expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future membership in the G20 and its growing role within BRICS.

Vieira also extended an invitation to Minister Tuggar for an upcoming BRICS ministerial meeting in April and a summit in July, which will be attended by President Bola Tinubu.

Additionally, Nigeria’s Ministers of Agriculture and Livestock have been invited to a summit for African agricultural ministers in Brazil, aimed at fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange in the sector.

The visit reinforces the commitment of both nations to advancing economic cooperation, diplomatic ties, and global partnerships in tackling shared challenges.
