ABUJA- Senate President Godswill Akpabio has assured that he will mobilise senators from the Niger Delta region, to nip in the bud, the lingering crisis in Rivers State.

Speaking on Friday in Abuja when he received a delegation of the Niger Delta Ethnic Nationalities Youth Leaders Forum that paid him a solidarity visit, the President of the Senate told the delegation that, he and other Senators from the Niger Delta would take up their request and see how they could bring peace to Rivers State particularly and any other sub-national needing similar intervention.

Recall that the Supreme Court upheld the decision of the lower court by stopping the state allocation until a valid House of Assembly, which has Martin Amaewhule as Speaker, is constituted.

In a follow-up to the judgment, the political crisis rocking Rivers State appears to be unending. The state House of Assembly, led by Martin Amaewhule, had given Governor Siminialayi a 48-hour ultimatum to Governor Siminalayi Fubara to present the 2025 budget before the House. The ultimatum had since expired on the midnight of Wednesday.

Also on Wednesday, the Amaewhule-led House directed the state governor to sack all commissioners and political appointees and re-submit for screening a list of new commissioner-nominees.

Speaking further, Akpabio has warned those he described as armchair critics to stop running uninformed commentaries on the Senate

According to the President of the Senate, individuals who are not well grounded in the rules of the Senate should desist from such attacks on the Upper Chamber.

Akpabio made the remarks against the backdrop of the recent decision of the Senate to suspend the Kogi Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, for flouting the Senate rules.

The President of the Senate wondered why people who had no idea of the rules of procedure in parliament were always the ones to run uninformed commentaries on television on matters they knew nothing about.

Akpabio, who noted that the Senate action on Akpoti-Uduaghan was a unanimous decision and wondered why people were not bothered to know why there was no dissenting voice in the Senate on the matter, said: “You should try to go and know the fact before you start running commentaries on television. So we will advise members of the public to desist from running commentaries on things that they do not know, misquoting the rules of the Senate.”
