For years, the narrative of sexual abuse in Nigeria has been largely one-sided, dominated by stories of female survivors. However, across social media, Nigerian men are breaking their silence, sharing harrowing accounts of childhood abuse at the hands of much older women—maids, aunts, neighbours, teachers, and even family friends. Their voices, once drowned in shame and societal indifference, are now demanding justice, recognition and healing, writes GODFREY GEORGE

Matt was only nine years old. He still bathed outside on a wooden slab behind the house with other boys. It was his first day of junior secondary school, and his mother’s youngest sister, Gloria, who was almost 30 then, was moving in with them.

She had just finished her National Youth Service in Kwara State and was looking for a job. Since Matt’s family lived in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, his mother invited her to come over.

“That was the beginning of my suffering,” he said.

That same morning, Gloria rushed to the backyard, hugged him, and jiggled his private parts after giving his buttocks a soft smack.

She laughed. His mother (name withheld) also laughed and asked Gloria to help wipe his body and bring him inside so he would not be late for school.

“That morning, I noticed Gloria used the body cream to massage my private parts until I had an erection. She kept massaging until it began to hurt. She told me not to cry, that if she did not do it, I might grow up having a small manhood,” Matt, now 28, recounts in his Ikorodu home.

Although this happened over 19 years ago, he said he still had traumatising nightmares about his time with Gloria.

The manhood massage, which he had to endure every morning when Gloria bathed him, was one of the horrible experiences Matt suffered.

At one point, he started lying to his mother, telling her he had already bathed very early with other boys, just to avoid his aunt.

“She would use the soap to massage my manhood until I began to feel pain. She did this outside. People would be watching, but they thought she was just bathing me because she was much older than me,” he recalled.
