Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has urged landlords not to increase house rents following the construction of new roads in the Agboyi-Ketu Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of the state.

The governor made this appeal on Thursday during the commissioning of Demurin, Agidi, and Church Streets in the LCDA.

Speaking at the event, which was attended by traditional rulers, government officials, and community leaders, Sanwo-Olu highlighted the impact of the newly completed roads on transportation and economic activities in the area.

Sanwo-Olu expressed satisfaction with the successful completion of the roads, stating that they would improve connectivity, ease traffic congestion, and enhance the overall well-being of residents.

He, however, cautioned landlords against taking advantage of the development to increase rents.

“Please do not increase your house rent because we are not doing this for you to put a burden on your tenants. The value of your property may have gone up, but I am begging you, do not use this as an opportunity to exploit tenants,” he said.

The governor explained that the roads provide a strategic bypass, reducing travel time between Alapere, Mile 12, and Ikorodu.

He noted that journeys that previously took up to 30 minutes can now be completed in under five minutes.

Sanwo-Olu assured residents that his administration would continue to invest in road infrastructure across Lagos, promising that more communities would benefit from similar projects.

Chairman of Agboyi-Ketu LCDA, Mayor Dele Osinowo, praised the Lagos State Government for reconstructing the roads, describing them as a game-changer for the local economy.

“If you knew Demurin and Agidi roads a few years ago, you would understand why this project is a huge relief. These roads were in terrible condition and negatively impacted businesses. But today, thanks to Mr. Governor, the situation has changed,” Osinowo said.

He acknowledged that property values in the area had risen due to the improved infrastructure but appealed to landlords to resist the urge to increase rents immediately.
