The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, NAPTIP, said it has rescued a 14-year-old girl who was allegedly subjected to abuse, starvation, exploitation by a house wife in Sokoto State.

In a statement signed by NAPTIP’s Press Officer, Vincent Adekoye, the young girl, Bashariyya Usman, was first identified in a viral video showing her in a distressed state following a rough treatment by her madam, who is the wife of a high-ranking government official.

The statement said she had been reportedly locked in a dark room, malnourished, and physically assaulted for several weeks, adding that she was the only daughter of Malam Usman Aliyu from Maradun Local Government Area of Zamfara State.


Her father, according to the statement, was displaced by bandit attacks and had been living with her family in an internally displaced persons, IDP, camp in Sokoto.

Following the father’s travail, his daughter, was recruited in January 2025 by the wife of a government official who lives in Abuja, and had promised to offer her domestic work with ₦10,000 monthly, and promised to send her to school.
