The Nasarawa State Police Command said it had begun a manhunt for a suspected gunrunner who abandoned a motorcycle and concealed one AK-47 rifle and two magazines along the Giza-Kadarko Road in the Keana Local Government Area of the state.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, Rahman Nansel, in a statement on Sunday, disclosed that they had received an intelligence report about the suspect transporting the firearms.

He said that a siege was laid for the suspect along the road, and while the suspect sighted the police, he abandoned the motorcycle he was driving and fled the scene.

Nansel stated, “On June 7, 2025, at about 16:00 hours, the Commissioner of Police, Nasarawa State Command, CP Shetima Jauro Mohammed, received credible intelligence regarding the movement of a suspected criminal transporting arms and ammunition. Acting swiftly on this report, the commissioner ordered a coordinated manhunt to apprehend the suspect.

“In compliance with these directives, police operatives from the Giza Division mounted a strategic stop-and-search operation along the Giza-Kadarko Road. During the operation, a suspicious individual riding an unregistered Bajaj motorcycle was intercepted.

“However, upon being flagged down for questioning, the suspect abandoned the motorcycle and fled into a nearby bush, evading immediate arrest.”

He stated further that upon a search of the abandoned motorcycle, the police team recovered “one AK-47 rifle (Breach No. 0413), two magazines and forty-five rounds of 7.62x39mm live ammunition.”

He added that a manhunt for the fleeing suspect had begun while urging members of the public to report any suspicious activity around them.

“This recovery strongly suggests a connection to criminal activity, and efforts are currently underway to apprehend the fleeing suspect and trace the origin and intended use of the recovered firearm and ammunition.

“The Nasarawa State Police Command remains resolute in its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all residents.

“We urge members of the public to remain vigilant and to promptly report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station or via our emergency contact lines,” Nansel concluded.

Abdullahi, a cattle trader from Kaduna State, was arrested alongside one Lawal Sani, a 40-year-old commercial bus driver from Katsina, by the anti-kidnapping unit of the Nasarawa State Police Command in a meticulously executed operation.
