Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have intercepted drug consignments disguised as green tea.

The operatives also seized narcotics concealed in a car’s spare tyre.

A statement on Sunday by the agency’s spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, said the drugs disguised as tea were recovered at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja, Lagos.

He said the NDLEA officers, acting on credible intelligence, seized 66 parcels of Loud, a potent strain of cannabis, disguised as green tea.

“The NDLEA had watch-listed the shipment and sustained surveillance around it for over three weeks before inviting other stakeholders for a joint examination last Thursday.

The Loud consignment weighing 62.20kg was concealed inside wraps of green tea that came from Thailand via the UAE on an Emirate Airlines flight,” Babafemi added.

In a related operation on June 2, Babafemi said the NDLEA agents intercepted a massive 1,665kg haul of skunk—another cannabis strain—along the Lekki-Ajah Expressway in Lagos.

He added that two suspects, identified as Gidado Abdulrasaq Ayinde and Obanla Oluwafemi, were arrested at the scene.

In Kaduna State, Babafemi said the NDLEA officers patrolling the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway arrested 29-year-old Goodluck Nnaemeka on Tuesday.

Babafemi added that he was found in possession of 612 bottles of codeine-laced syrup and 2,970 pills of flunitrazepam, a controlled sedative.

“In another operation the same day, a 52-year-old wanted drug dealer, Kabiru Musa (a.k.a KB), was arrested at Kurmin Mashi. A total of 25.7kg skunk was earlier recovered from his base.

While a total of 9kg Loud was recovered from the spare tyre compartment of an Audi Station Wagon car marked AAA 975 XU driven by Atari Israel, 45, along Auchi Road, Edo State, two young ladies: Favour Joy and Joy Igwe were on Tuesday, June 3, nabbed at the Ikpoba Hill area of Benin City. Recovered from them include: 106.57kg skunk; 1kg Loud; 800 grams Colorado and 302 grams of methamphetamine,” the statement said.
