The National Orientation Agency, Akwa Ibom State Directorate, has raised concern over the spread of illegal small arms and light weapons, warning that it posed a major threat to Nigeria’s peace, security, and sustainable development.

The State Director of NOA, Mr Mkpoutom Mkpoutom, described the proliferation of such weapons as a dangerous trend fueling violent crimes, communal clashes, terrorism, and human rights abuses across the country.

Mkpoutom, who spoke during a press briefing in Uyo, the state capital, according to a statement shared with Sunday PUNCH, said, “These weapons, whether used in armed robbery or terrorism, have caused unimaginable devastation. The destruction is not only physical but deeply social and economic.”

He explained that while small arms include pistols, rifles, and submachine guns, light weapons cover more lethal firearms such as grenade launchers and machine guns, often used by criminal gangs and insurgent groups.

Mkpoutom emphasised that their affordability and accessibility made them attractive to non-state actors, exacerbating insecurity.

Calling for a multi-stakeholder response, Mkpoutom urged security agencies, civil society, traditional rulers, and citizens to partner with NOA in stopping the menace.

“Security is everyone’s business. We must educate, collaborate, and report suspicious movements to break the cycle of violence,” he stated.

Also speaking at the conference, Head of the Department of Community Safety, Awareness and Compliance, Mrs Nsidibe Udoette, highlighted the broader societal impact of illegal arms.

“This is not just a security issue, it’s a direct assault on human dignity,” she said, noting their role in organized crime, gender-based violence, and displacement.
