In efforts to meet SDG-5 and SDG-8, the wife of the President, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, in collaboration with the Office of the Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals, has empowered 500 business women in Delta State through its economic empowerment programme.

At the ceremony held on Saturday in Asaba, the Delta State capital, the women entrepreneurs received essential business tools, including deep freezers, gas cookers with ovens, generators, and grain grinding machines.

In her remarks, the First Lady underscored the vital role of empowering women in achieving national development.

Tinubu, represented by the wife of the Deputy Governor of Delta State, Mrs. Catherine Onyeme, said the intervention was part of a larger national programme to impact 18,500 women across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

Oluremi said, “This programme acknowledges the vital role women play in nation-building and aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which emphasizes inclusivity, economic growth, and sustainable development for all Nigerians, with a particular focus on empowering women economically.

“Empowering women is essential to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG-5 (Gender Equality) and SDG-8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth).

“The items being distributed today are intended to equip our women with the tools and resources they need to build successful businesses and contribute to the prosperity of our great nation.”

Also speaking, wife of the Delta State Governor, Mrs. Tobore Oborevwori represented by the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Pat Ajudua urged beneficiaries to utilize the items provided to them.

She said the empowerment was not charity, but a capacity building that will shape a brighter future.

She said the programme aligns closely with Nigeria’s broader objectives of poverty alleviation and hunger eradication, two core pillars of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and reflects the government’s commitment to inclusive growth through focused partnerships and genuine intervention.

Beneficiaries were encouraged to seize the opportunity to build sustainable businesses and become catalysts for economic growth within their communities.
