With peace returning to Maidoti and Gbelebu communities in Ovia South-West Local Government Area after a communal clash, the state government has donated relief materials worth N20m to the people.

Recall that a recent communal clash led to deaths, destruction of property and disruption of peace and livelihood in the warring communities.

The gesture by the government was through the Edo State Emergency Management Agency, which conducted an on-the-spot assessment of the situation and immediately released financial aid to affected families.

Speaking on the donation, the Executive Secretary of EdoSEMA, Jerry Idahosa, on behalf of Governor Monday Okpebholo reassured residents of the communities government’s unwavering commitment to grassroots development and sustainable peace.

He said, “This is governance in its truest and most humane form. We are not just handing out food. We are reinforcing your strength and your right to a government that cares.

“Financial support has been sent to the affected families to help begin the rebuilding of homes and restoration of destroyed properties.

This was not a token gesture. It is a commitment backed by action.
“Under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Federal Government has prioritized grassroots engagement and inclusive recovery. Edo State is proud to complement that agenda through direct interventions such as this.”

Chief Security Officer of Maidoti’s local vigilante group, Igbala Ibazuaye expressed gratitude for the governor’s prompt and compassionate response.

He stated, “I cried out to the governor, and he welcomed us to Government House. He promised N20 million and the establishment of a security post among other things, which he delivered. He came just five days after the incident, declared peace, and since then, peace has returned.”

In a similar vein, the Amanowei of the Gbalebu community, High Chief Enoch Soluboh commended the government for keeping its word.

He added, “At first, we were skeptical due to past disappointments, but this governor kept his word. Peace now reigns, and we will continue to support his administration.”

Residents of both communities received the relief items with joy and appreciation, describing the gesture as unprecedented. Community leaders also reiterated their commitment to maintaining peace and supporting the government’s broader development agenda.
