The Kaduna State Government has revoked the sale of houses and land within some of its oldest public schools, including Queen Amina College, Kaduna; Alhuda-Huda College, Zaria; and Government Commercial College, Zaria.

This decision aligns with the government’s commitment to human capital development and its aim to ensure a conducive atmosphere for teaching and learning in schools.

The Secretary to the Kaduna State Government, Dr AbdulKadir Mu’azu Meyere, in a statement released on Tuesday, said the revocation had been approved last year and that steps are being taken to refund monies paid by allottees.

“The Kaduna State Government, under the leadership of His Excellency, Senator Uba Sani, has revoked all previous sales of institutional houses and land allocations within Alhuda-Huda College, Zaria; Queen Amina College, Kaduna; and Government Commercial College, Zaria, in the overriding public interest and for the common good,” Meyere said.

He added that the government believes effective learning can best occur in a conducive environment free from distractions and other interferences.

Governor Uba Sani has emphasised the importance of education as both a leveller and a ladder for upward mobility, with the power to transform lives and improve livelihoods.

“Effective learning can best take place in a conducive atmosphere without distractions and sundry interferences. Education is not just a leveller but also a ladder for upward mobility, which can transform lives and improve livelihoods,” the statement said.

It noted that the governor has been working to expand access to education by addressing infrastructure deficits in both primary and secondary schools.
“Some of the initiatives implemented by the Kaduna State Government include constructing over 2,336 new classrooms, renovating more than 707 classrooms, and providing 3,704 pieces of furniture for teachers and 30,742 pieces for pupils.

“The government has also sunk 51 boreholes and provided 918 cubicle toilets for both pupils and teachers,” Meyere added.

PUNCH Online had earlier reported that the Queen Amina College Kakuri-Kaduna Old Girls’ Association had called on the Kaduna State Government to reconsider its decision to sell the school’s staff quarters and other available land.

The association argued that such a move would have far-reaching consequences for students, staff, and the overall quality of education at the historic institution.

In a letter addressed to the Kaduna State Government, obtained by our correspondent on Tuesday, the association expressed its deep concern over the sale, stating that it would worsen the already dire conditions at the school.

“Queen Amina College is already struggling with severe overcrowding, inadequate sanitary facilities, and dilapidated infrastructure.

“Each dormitory houses an average of 180 students, with three girls often forced to share a single 6-inch spring bed — conditions worse than sardines in a can,” the letter read.
