In a bid to reduce reliance on the national grid and mitigate the financial impact of tariff hikes, the State House has allocated N10 billion for a solar mini-grid project at the Presidential Villa. This move is part of the 2025 budget, which aims to promote energy efficiency and sustainability.

The solar mini-grid project is expected to reduce the Villa's annual energy bill of N6 billion by N5 billion. This significant cost savings will be achieved through the installation of a 40MW solar power plant, which will provide a stable and reliable source of energy.

Why Solar Energy?

The decision to switch to solar energy comes amid concerns over unreliable public electricity supply and high costs for households and government institutions. With the national grid failing at a cost of $29 billion yearly, the State House is exploring alternative energy sources to power its operations.

Benefits of the Solar Mini-Grid Project

Reduced Energy Costs: The solar mini-grid project is expected to save the Presidential Villa N5 billion annually on energy bills.
Increased Energy Efficiency: The project will promote energy efficiency and sustainability, reducing the Villa's reliance on diesel-powered generators.
Improved Reliability: The solar mini-grid will provide a stable and reliable source of energy, shielding the Villa from power outages.

Other Key Projects in the 2025 Budget

Settlement of Liabilities: N11.92 billion has been allocated to settle outstanding liabilities to contractors, including Julius Berger Nigeria.
Routine Maintenance: N6.04 billion has been allocated for routine maintenance of Villa facilities, while N5.49 billion will go towards maintenance at the Presidential Villa.
Transportation and Logistics: N3.66 billion has been allocated for the procurement of new operational vehicles for the State House, with N1.09 billion for replacing SUVs.

The allocation of N10 billion for the solar mini-grid project is a significant step towards promoting renewable energy and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. If successful, this project could pave the way for more solar-powered initiatives in Nigeria.
