The management of the University of Ibadan has decried the rising number of female students participating in egg donation to generate income.

The university stated that while egg donation had offered hope to families facing infertility challenges, it should not be regarded as a steady source of income or a side hustle.

This was stated in a memo signed by the Director of the University Health Service, Dr. Aderonke Ajayi.

Ajayi expressed concern that female students were being recruited and participating as egg donors for in vitro fertilisation, often facilitated by individuals, agents, or agencies.

She added that egg donation involves the administration of hormonal medications to stimulate the ovaries, a procedure that comes with several short-term health risks.

Listing the health implications, Ajayi noted, “Abdominal pain, breast tenderness, bloating, mood swings, Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome, infection, and bleeding, among others.”

The memo read, “It has come to our attention that there is a growing trend within the university community involving the participation and/or recruitment of female students as egg donors for in vitro fertilisation by individuals, agents, or agencies.

“While egg donation has brought hope to many families struggling with infertility, it is important to note that it should not be considered a permanent source of income or an alternative ‘side hustle.’”

The expert warned that some egg donors have reported long-term effects, including the possibility of losing fertility, stressing that current research is still inconclusive about who is medically safe to donate eggs and how many times a person can safely undergo the procedure.

She recommended limiting egg donation to no more than three times a year and encouraged students to opt for reputable clinics that follow established medical protocols and place a strong emphasis on donor safety.
