The Lord Mayor of Leeds, United Kingdom, Abigail Katung, wife of Senator Sunday Katung, has been conferred with the prestigious traditional title of Gimbiyan Jaba-The Princess of Ham in Jaba local government area of Kaduna State.

The coronation ceremony, which took place on Friday at the Kpop Ham Palace in Kwoi, was attended by dignitaries, including top military officers, government officials, and academicians.

Other honourees included Dr. Gideon Jock, conferred with the title Hasken Jaba (Light of Jaba); Barr. Dr. Deborah Usman, as Jakadiyan Jaba (Ambassador of Jaba); and Engr. Dr. Dogara Gyet, as Jagaban Jaba (Forerunner of Jaba).

Expressing her joy, Lord Mayor Katung said, “To still be remembered in your homeland after so many years away is a thing of joy. This recognition is deeply meaningful, especially coming from my people.

“Culture is at the heart of everything we do. It shapes who we are. I hope to inspire young girls to believe in themselves and work hard to achieve their dreams,” she added.

She attributed her success to her husband’s support and emphasised the importance of gender inclusion, calling on those in power to create more inclusive environments for women.

“I call on those in positions of power to create more inclusive environments for women. Women make up half of the world’s population—and the other half was birthed by them,” she said.

Katung congratulated his wife and other honourees, thanking the Kpop Ham, Dr. Danladi Gyet Maude, for the honour.

“This recognition is a testament to your unwavering commitment, integrity, and service to our people,” he said.

The event showcased the rich cultural heritage of the Ham Nation and the significance of traditional titles in Kaduna State.

The honorees are expected to uphold the values and traditions of the Ham Nation, serving as role models and ambassadors for their communities.
