The China Cultural Centre in Nigeria marked the 2025 International Chinese Language Day on Friday with a celebration that highlighted the growing interest in the Chinese language and culture among Nigerians.

The Deputy Director of the Centre, Liu Zhanping, who spoke at the event, stressed the importance of the Chinese language as a medium for cultural exchange and understanding, calling it one of the world’s oldest and most dynamic languages.

Zhanping noted the increasing number of Nigerians embracing the Chinese language, attributing it to a shared commitment to multicultural dialogue.

“International Chinese Language Day is a global celebration for Chinese language enthusiasts, aiming at promoting the Chinese language and cultural exchange. As one of the world’s oldest yet most dynamic languages, Chinese embodies profound cultural wisdom.

“Chinese is not merely a tool for communication but a bridge connecting cultures and hearts. In Nigeria, a growing number of friends are embracing Chinese learning—a testament to the language’s allure and our collective commitment to multicultural dialogue,” he said.

Zhanping highlighted the Centre’s efforts in promoting Chinese education in Nigeria through diverse language courses suited to various age groups and professions.

“Since its establishment, the China Cultural Center in Nigeria has dedicated itself to advancing Chinese education and cultural exchange. We offer diverse courses tailored to all proficiency levels, ages, and professions.

“Our professional and passionate instructors provide high-quality teaching, guiding learners to overcome challenges and master the language,” he said.

The Centre also hosts cultural activities such as calligraphy exhibitions, traditional opera performances, and martial arts demonstrations to further immerse students in Chinese heritage.

Zhanping underscored the role of cultural exchange in the globalised world, stressing the growing influence of the Chinese language and the significance of Nigeria in fostering China-Africa relations.

“In this globalised era, cultural exchange is paramount. As a vital window into China, Chinese continues to grow in global influence. Nigeria, a key nation in Africa, plays a key role in fostering China-Africa cultural ties.

“Through International Chinese Language Day, we hope to inspire more Nigerians to join this journey, strengthening the bond of friendship between our peoples and enriching global cultural diversity,” Zhanping concluded.

Over 250 participants attended the event, including Nigerian government officials, teachers and students from China Corner School, representatives from Chinese-funded enterprises and media reporters.
