China’s new 84% retaliatory tariff on imported U.S. goods has officially taken effect, marking a sharp escalation in the ongoing trade war between Beijing and Washington.

The move follows the Donald Trump administration’s decision to raise tariffs on Chinese imports from 104% to a staggering 125%.


While Trump has placed a 90-day freeze on further tariff hikes for other countries, Beijing has been singled out for tougher treatment — a move analysts say signals a deepening rift between the world’s two largest economies.

In response, China has filed a fresh complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO), accusing the U.S. of “bullying tactics” and undermining global trade norms.

Despite the sharp rhetoric, there were signs of cautious optimism in Asia’s markets. Major stock indices across the region posted gains in early trading hours, buoyed by the temporary reprieve for non-Chinese exporters.

“Exporters in the region are breathing a massive sigh of relief,” one market analyst told the BBC, referring to the 90-day pause that spares several Asian economies from immediate tariff hikes.


Some countries are also taking steps to strengthen ties with Washington. Vietnam, for example, announced that it has secured U.S. agreement to begin negotiations on a potential trade deal — a signal that dialogue remains possible amid the broader tensions.

Chinese state media, while continuing to call for international solidarity against U.S. tariffs, has noticeably downplayed Washington’s selective pause, choosing instead to focus on rallying global resistance.

With neither side showing signs of backing down, the months ahead may prove pivotal in determining the direction of global trade and economic stability.
