In a bid to improve access to healthcare, doctors from the United States and Canada have partnered with the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas to deliver lifesaving care to over 800 patients in Lagos.

In a statement signed by the Chair-Elect of the ANPA New Jersey Chapter, Dr. Emmanuel Emeasoba, and made available to PUNCH Online on Wednesday, after wrapping up its annual medical mission in Lagos, deploying over 140 volunteer health professionals to deliver critical care services to underserved communities, said one of the mission’s landmark achievements, was the successful performance of the first-ever gastrointestinal procedures during the outreach—a development that not only expanded the local medical capacity but also brought renewed hope to patients who had waited years for such care.

He stated, “This year’s mission focused not only on offering vital medical care but also on delivering a comprehensive range of services. Volunteer physicians, many of whom traveled from the U.S. and Canada, have partnered with local healthcare professionals to provide general consultations, life-saving surgeries, dental care, vision screenings, gastrointestinal procedures, and a host of educational sessions—all at no cost to patients.

“Each morning since the mission began, long before dawn, crowds gathered at the designated health centers—the Lagos University Teaching Hospital and the Federal Medical Centre. Many patients, including children, the elderly, and adults who had long postponed medical treatment due to financial or logistical barriers, arrived with optimism, eager to receive care.”

Emeasoba emphasised that beyond immediate treatment, the mission aimed to foster long-term impact, “While medical care was the mission’s primary focus, the initiative also aimed to create lasting improvements in Nigeria’s healthcare system.

“Workshops were held with local medical professionals to share knowledge on best practices and emerging technologies. Conversations with government and institutional stakeholders also explored strategies for strengthening the healthcare infrastructure in Lagos and beyond.”

“Every patient we treat, every professional we empower, brings us closer to a future where no Nigerian is left behind in healthcare.”

“A Healthier Nigeria in a Healthier World,” he said, continues to resonate—leaving behind not just treated patients, but also a strengthened foundation for healthcare partnerships and systemic growth.

Emeasoba said that over 800 patients received medical attention that focused on long-term healing, emphasizing the importance of multidisciplinary treatment.

Emeasoba, who also led the ANPA Internal Medicine and Cardiology Division medical outreach at the Federal Medical Centre in Ebute Metta, noted that the medical mission offered a range of critical services, including specialised cardiology evaluations, internal medicine consultations, and physical therapy for patients recovering from chronic illnesses and musculoskeletal conditions.
