The Association of Resident Doctors of Nigeria, Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu chapter, has described the recently built N2bn Sulaiman Adebola Adegunwa Foundation Trauma Centre as a major milestone in enhancing qualitative healthcare delivery for Nigerians.

The centre, donated by the billionaire industrialist and Chairman of Rite Foods, Alhaji Sulaiman Adegunwa, to mark his 80th birthday, was inaugurated on Saturday by President Bola Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima.

The doctors stressed strong collaboration with organisations, well-meaning individuals, and foundations, among others, as key to developing the health sector.

Speaking with The PUNCH on Sunday, the President of the ARD, OOUTH chapter, Dr Olusola Monehin, said the association received the health facility gift with gratitude and appreciation to the donor who, about 30 years ago, also donated a multimillion naira audio-visual building to the teaching hospital.

Dr Monehin said the centre, which is also equipped with some modern medical equipment, would help to provide qualitative healthcare delivery for trauma patients and serve as an excellent training centre for trauma care.

He said the “ARD considered this Sulaiman Adebola Adegunwa Foundation Trauma Centre as a major milestone achievement in the development of the health sector and enhancement of qualitative healthcare delivery in the country.

“This place is going to serve a lot of purposes, particularly as a centre of excellence for the training of resident doctors on trauma engagement.

“This will also encourage many people to come to Ogun State for their residency training to become specialists in trauma care.

“Most importantly, the trauma centre is a welcome development, given the fact that the state is playing host to two major highways in the country; the Lagos-Ibadan expressway and Sagamu-Ijebu-Ode-Benin expressway.”

Dr Monehin also thanked Governor Dapo Abiodun for his commitment to the development of the hospital and for prioritising the welfare and training of the resident doctors.

He, however, urged the governor to help with the payment of 2025 MTRF and to also do more in terms of additional infrastructural development that would further help to strengthen and boost healthcare delivery in the state”.

The doctors also commended the governing board chairman, Dr Kunle Hassan and the Chief Medical Director of the teaching hospital, Dr Bunmi Fatungase, for providing leadership.
