The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Inter-Parliamentary Affairs, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, has said President Bola Tinubu’s consistent regard for national sovereignty has played a pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s foreign policy posture in recent times.

Ibrahim, who is representing Ondo South under the All Progressives Congress, made the remark while addressing delegates at the ongoing 150th Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

In a statement made available on Sunday, the lawmaker pointed to the Niger Republic crisis as a clear demonstration of Tinubu’s commitment to defending Nigeria’s national interest, particularly in his role as ECOWAS Chairman.

He said, “President Tinubu’s approach to regional diplomacy reflects a deep respect for the sovereignty of nations while pushing for peaceful democratic coexistence. His leadership style is one that blends liberal values with strategic national interest.”

Ibrahim also stressed the importance of synergy between the National Assembly and the executive arm of government, describing the collaboration as a stabilising factor in the Tinubu administration.

“While we embrace the principle of separation of powers, the British model teaches us that total independence is impractical. What matters most is mutual respect. We need one another to build a functioning democracy,” he said.

According to him, even seemingly global tools like email are beyond the control of any single nation, illustrating how interconnected governance has become in the modern world.

He further noted that Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda prioritises unity among the three arms of government in a bid to ensure stability, reduce friction, and tackle issues such as poverty.

“We are not in a war zone. There’s no basis for confrontation between the arms of government. President Tinubu is focused on fostering democratic harmony, and his reforms are geared towards eliminating policy dissonance and promoting effective governance,” Ibrahim added.

The IPU Assembly, which runs from April 5 to 9, brings together parliamentarians from across the globe to discuss pressing issues affecting governance and international cooperation.
