The acting Inspector General for the Pentagon, Steven Stebbins, has announced an investigation into Defense Secretary, Pete Hegseth’s use of the signal app to discuss potentially classified information with other members of the US President Donald Trump cabinet last month.

Stebbins, in a memo released on Thursday, announced a probe into Hegseth over a discussion about attacking Houthi targets in Yemen on the commercial app.

Recall that Trump’s administration is facing a scandal over the accidental leak of a group chat by senior security officials on the strikes.


The strikes targeted Yemen’s Huthi rebels in a bid to control their attacks on commercial shipping and military vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

However, the memo from Stebbins, suggested that the probe will evaluate “the extent to which the Secretary of Defence and other DoD personnel complied with DoD policies and procedures for the use of a commercial messaging application for official business.”

“Additionally, we will review compliance with classification and records retention requirements”, the memo added.
