The Northern Elders Political Development Group has praised President Bola Tinubu, the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, and the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, for their collaborative efforts in enhancing security in the North-West region of Nigeria.

In a statement issued by its Secretary, Dr. Adamu Giwa, in Kaduna on Tuesday, the group noted that the majority of towns and villages in the region were able to observe Eid-el-Fitri peacefully, without any recorded cases of bandit attacks, despite pockets of unrest in Sokoto and Zamfara states.

“We are pleased to note that the majority of towns and villages in the North-West region observed their Eid-el-Fitri peacefully without recorded cases of bandits’ attacks,” Giwa said.

The commendation comes after the successful operation of Fansa Yamma, which led to the destruction of bandit enclaves in some areas of the North-West.

According to Giwa, the group believes that the improved security has significantly reduced challenges related to travel and trade, especially along major routes such as Sokoto to Gusau and Kano.

“The improved security in the North-West has significantly reduced challenges related to travelling and trading, particularly along major routes. This is a welcome development, and we commend the efforts of the military and other security agencies in achieving this feat,” he added.

The group praised President Tinubu’s support and goodwill towards the troops, which has contributed to positive results in reducing kidnappings and banditry in Zamfara, Katsina, and Sokoto states.

“We applaud President Tinubu’s support and goodwill toward the troops, which has boosted their morale and enabled them to achieve success in their operations against banditry,” Giwa said.

However, the group raised concerns over reports of ongoing attacks in some villages, including Sabon Birni and Isa in Sokoto state, as well as in parts of Katsina, Kebbi, and Zamfara states.

Giwa acknowledged these concerns but expressed confidence that the military and security agencies were doing their best to address the situation.
