In a move to commemorate this year’s Ramadan Fasting and Eid-el-Fitr celebration, Jigawa State Governor, Umar Namadi, has granted state pardon to 10 inmates serving various convictions within the Nigerian Correctional Service Centers.

The pardon was granted following the recommendation by the State’s Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, as stated in Section 212 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999.

A statement made available to newsmen in Dutse, the state capital on Saturday by the state Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Bello Fanini said, “This move will ensure the seamless exercise of the Council’s functions and promote fairness and equity in the administration of justice.”

According to Fanini, the pardon is a demonstration of Namadi’s commitment to the rule of law, equity, fairness, and principles of forgiveness.

“The pardon includes four inmates who have exhibited good character, pardoned to be on probation, to complete the few months remaining of their long-term sentences,” he stated.

The statement further reads, “One inmate was pardoned to be on probation, on the ground of ill health, while five fully reformed inmates, who have less than a year remaining of their sentences, were pardoned unconditionally.”

While making the recommendations, he explained that the Advisory Council applauded Namadi’s commitment to departing from the past and granting approval for monthly allocation of funds to the Council.

He added that, “The pardon, contained in Prerogative of Mercy – State Pardon Order No. 1 of 2025, has been conveyed to the State’s Comptroller of the Nigerian Correctional Service for immediate compliance.”

Fanini explained that Namadi’s decision is a step towards promoting rehabilitation and reintegration of offenders into society.

“The move is also seen as a gesture of goodwill and compassion, particularly during the holy month of Ramadan.”
