No fewer than 120 women have been empowered in waste recycling by a climate action organisation organisation, GreeningUp Africa.

According to a statement by the Executive Director of the firm, Victor Akinmuyiwa, the beneficiaries were drawn from various communities in Ibadan, Oyo State, and trained on how to convert waste into valuable materials through the Women Living and Winning with Recycling initiative.

Akinmuyiwa said the women celebrated how recycling had transformed their lives, providing financial stability while contributing to environmental conservation.

“As the world commemorates Global Recycling Day and celebrates Women’s Month, GreeningUp Africa has once again demonstrated its unwavering commitment to empowering women through sustainable solutions.

“Through its flagship initiative, the Green Impact Nigeria Project, supported by Climate-KIC—Europe’s leading Climate Innovation Agency—and funded by Irish Aid, GreeningUp Africa has continued to foster economic resilience for women by integrating recycling into their livelihoods.”

“On this special occasion, 120 women from various communities gathered in Ibadan, Nigeria, to share their experiences on how recycling has transformed their lives. These women, beneficiaries of GreeningUp Africa’s Women Living and Winning with Recycling initiative, have turned waste into wealth, securing financial stability for their families while contributing to environmental conservation,” the statement read.

Co-founder and Sustainability & Development Coordinator at GreeningUp Africa, Omolayo Oyelakin, said, “Recycling isn’t just about protecting the environment; it is about providing economic justice and inclusion.

“When women are given access to sustainable opportunities, they become powerful agents of change in their communities. By empowering women, we’re not just tackling waste management—we’re contributing to economic growth and advancing gender equality.”

A beneficiary, Adebisi Fola, said, “For many of us, recycling is more than just waste management; it is a means of economic independence. The money I have earned through recycling plastic and paper has allowed me to send my children to school, pay for household expenses, and contribute to our community’s well-being.”
