The MEXT (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship is a fully funded scholarship provided by the Japanese government to support outstanding international students. The scholarship covers:

Eligibility Criteria
The University of Tsukuba offers MEXT scholarships through two main routes:

Embassy Recommendation
University Recommendation (General and Special Programs)
1. Embassy Recommendation Route
Applicants must first apply through the Japanese Embassy or Consulate in their home country. Only after passing the first screening are applicants eligible to contact Japanese universities for a Letter of Provisional Acceptance.

Key Steps:
April–July 2025: Apply via Japanese Embassy in your country
By September 1, 2025: Request a Letter of Provisional Acceptance from the University of Tsukuba
September–October 2025: Receive the acceptance letter and submit it to the embassy
November 2025 – March 2026: MEXT conducts second screening
April or October 2026: Enroll at the University of Tsukuba
Note: You can find professors at Tsukuba via TRIOS and are required to notify the Division of Student Exchange once you’ve contacted a potential supervisor.

2. University Recommendation Route
This route allows the University of Tsukuba to nominate top applicants directly to MEXT. There are two types:

A. General Program
Open to international applicants for master’s or doctoral programs.
Applicants must be from MEXT-designated countries.
Contact with a prospective academic advisor is essential before applying.
Only a limited number (usually 3) are nominated annually.
Timeline:

Nov–Dec 2025: Application period
Jan–Feb 2026: Internal university selection
June 2026: Final result by MEXT
Oct 2026: Enrollment
B. Special Program
These are pre-approved MEXT-funded degree programs offered by the University of Tsukuba. Applicants must pass the program's entrance examination first.
